Embarking on a journey in data science is both exhilarating and challenging. As someone who has navigated this path at one of Australia’s leading universities - The University of Western Australia, I’d like to share my experiences, insights, and lessons learned along the way. Whether you're contemplating a similar journey or simply curious about the world of data science, I hope my story resonates with you.
The Decision to Pursue Data Science
My fascination with data began while I was working at Relaxo Footwears in India, where I was drawn to working on Sales forecasting and achievements. Back then, people used to work manually and there was no strong evidence to what they are achieving. When I discovered the field of data science, it felt like the perfect blend of my interests. Soon after that, I joined a startup - Curate Data Analytics, where I was solving clients problems using analytics and digital transformation. I still believed that something is missing and I need to enhance my data science skills specially Machine Learning. Also, at that time I was quite interested to work in Australia for a bit. I researched various programs and ultimately decided to enroll in one of Australia’s top universities, known for its strong emphasis on research and innovation.
The Learning Environment
From the moment I stepped onto campus, I was immersed in an environment that fostered creativity and collaboration. The faculty were not just educators; they were industry professionals and researchers passionate about their fields. Courses were designed to be hands-on, integrating real-world projects that allowed us to apply theoretical knowledge practically.
Key Skills
Some of the standout skills that shaped my understanding included:
Machine Learning: This unit demystified algorithms and introduced me to practical applications in predictive analytics.
Natural Language Processing: This unit helped me understand how ChatGPT worked. :D (Of course you can study this online for FREE) This was one of the best units I would say, this helped me to work on unstructured data and perform semantic analysis. I will soon upload the projects on Github.
